If you are looking for a story that is filled with tension and suspense, this is the story for you. Katelyn McBride comes to live with her grandfather after her mother dies in an earthquake. She has to adjust to a new home with a grandfather she doesn't know very well. She also has to adjust to living in a small town in the Ozarks instead of Santa Monica. She also comes to the town after a young girl is mauled and killed in the woods. Her grandfather insists that she not go into the woods or travel alone after dark. This is just one more for thing for Katelyn to get used to. She meets a number of the kids and begins to form friendships. But it seems that everyone has secrets that they aren't sharing. And everyone tells her to be suspicious of everyone else. She rides to school with Trick who is a hottie but she doesn't learn very much about him. She is befriended by Cordelia who really hates Trick. Cordelia also seems to blow hot and cold. She does some things that confuse Katelyn. Katelyn also meets Justin who is a cousin of Cordelia's who is also a hottie and who comes on to her even though she has a girlfriend. She and Cordelia are assigned a social studies project to investigate a local legend. They decide to investigate a lost silver mine which is supposedly guarded by a hellhound. Locals tell of visits by the hellhound every 40 or so years. After the death of a second young girl, the idea that the hellhound might be responsible adds to the fear and tension in the town. Cordelia is really conflicted about doing the project. At first she tries to convince Katelyn to choose something else, then she agrees to do, and then she is hesitant again. Katelyn doesn't know what to think. While I liked Katelyn and felt connected to her, I didn't feel much connection with any of the other characters. I found Cordelia especially problematic. She seemed so inconsistent in her relationship with Katelyn. Finding out that she was a werewolf explained a little of the inconsistency. In this story, werewolves keep their existence secret and have very strict rules about their behavior and especially about telling outsiders what they are. Cordelia doesn't let Katelyn know she is one until after Katelyn is attacked and bitten by a wolf and starts experiencing symptoms that indicate that she might be turning into a werewolf herself. We don't get to know too much about Trick or Justin either. Katelyn is attracted to both. She doesn't understand why she feels almost compelled to be with Justin. Trick is very interested in Katelyn but she can't talk to him about the whole werewolf thing. Justin knows about the werewolf thing because he is one himself. However, Justin shouldn't be involved with her because his mate has already been chosen for him. It is sort of a love triangle but the relationships aren't resolved. The story ended abruptly leaving most issues unresolved. It seemed that there was a really big build-up of suspense and excitement that all came to a very abrupt end when the book ended. Readers will be on the edge of their seats waiting for the next book in this trilogy.
