This sequel to Magic Under Glass has Erris and Nimira traveling north to visit the sorcerer Ordorio Valdana who may have some insight in how to restore Erris to life. Tensions are high between Nimira and Erris because Erris is grieving his old life and is frightened about his future. He is pulling away from Nimira which just makes her feel more alone and unsettled too. When they arrive at Valdana's house he is away but they discover that he has a half-fairy daughter who is Erris' niece. They also discover that he is not a popular man in the neighborhood because of his actions during the fairy human war. They end up spending some considerable time waiting for Ordorio to come home. Erris uses the time to try to recover some of his fairy magic and to teach his niece about her heritage. Nimira uses her time to learn magic.Meanwhile, back in the fairy lands, the ruling family is having trouble with a dissatisfied populace and internal rivalries. When the youngest son brings his father a jinn, he wins the contest to be the next heir. However, he doesn't feel that he will be a good king and he is constantly being undermined by his brothers who feel they are more worthy of the throne. The king binds the jinn to him and sets him off to look for Erris because he is the true heir to the throne. Ifra is the jinn and we get to know quite a bit about him and about the jinn as he searches for Erris. He finds the household and Ordorio's daughter Violet tries to convince Ifra to take her to fairy lands. She is a very sheltered, spoiled and naive young girl but she treats Ifra like a human. Ifra has to follow the king's commands but he has some room to disobey if he is creative. He returns to fairy land without either Erris or Violet. The king binds him more tightly and sends him back to kill Erris' clockwork body and to bring Violet back with him. This time Ifra is forced to obey. But he also puts Violet in touch with the organized rebellion that wants to restore Erris or Violet to the throne.Back in the human lands, Nimira is grief stricken because of what happened to Erris but she still has hope that his human body exists somewhere in fairy and she is determined to rescue him. She and a companion travel to fairy to rescue him. This was an exciting adventure. I think anyone who has read Magic Under Glass will enjoy following the continuing adventures of both Erris and Nimira. They will also like to get to know Ifra and Violet. I recommend this one to young adult fantasy lovers.
